Ons Appel Kookboek is a recipe book formed through conversations with care home residents living with Dementia to discover the significant place the apple has in Belgian culture, history, and memory.
The project brought together residents to explore apples through observation, discussion, and tasting sessions. The collected recipes reflect the ingredients and dishes that sparked stories and memories. They are drawn from family collections and various editions of Ons Kookboek, a cornerstone of Flemish culinary literature first published in 1927, as well as from the personal accounts shared by our participants. As a result, the recipes included in this collection are by their nature accessible to readers of all ages.
Ons Appel Kookboek was created by Watson Memic in collaboration with MHKA Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp and Museum E!. It is a response to ‘Apple. An Introduction (over and over and once again)’, an ongoing artwork by Antje Majewski and Pawet Freisler, centring around the apple as an art object and as a case study of biodiversity under threat.
Printed in a first edition of 100, including 15 copies signed by the contributors.
